§10 xArm 850

Manuals, videos and other useful resources

The manuals, software documentation and videos behind this site, with their caption status.

Start here

This section tells you where to read further, which resource suits which tier, and how usable each one is: whether a document covers this machine or only its family, and whether a video has captions.

  • Start at UFactory Docs, UFACTORY's documentation hub. It links the 850 hardware manual, the Studio manual, the API documents and the release notes in one place12.
  • Many UFACTORY tutorials are titled for the xArm series rather than the 850. No 850-specific set-up video was found, so check each step against the 850's own hardware manual34.
  • Videos play on this page only when you press play, and then from YouTube's no-cookie domain; until then nothing loads from YouTube. When checked, none of the UFACTORY videos had captions, so each card says "No captions", and this site states in words every fact it takes from a video567.

S2 in one line: S2 is the xArm 850 arm that picks up incoming material and moves it between receiving, staging and production89.

Look back

A question from earlier on, to keep it fresh. Skip it if you like; nothing depends on it.

q-s07-b-02Safety Your hand is on the table edge and the arm is moving toward the table. What is the hazard?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Yes. OSHA lists crushing and trapping between the robot, its tool or the workpiece and other equipment.46

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. Shock is a risk from cables and the power supply. A moving arm near a fixed edge is a crush hazard.474846

  3. Check option (c)

Not this one. Collision detection is not a validated safeguard. No UFACTORY document calls it safety-rated, so never rely on it to protect your hand.4937

q-s09-b-02 Which of these is an open question, not a known fact?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. It is a gap, waiting for access to the physical cell.50

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. The 5 kg figure is Verified from UFACTORY's specification table. That the tool counts toward it is this platform's inference, but the figure itself is not an open question.5152

  3. Check option (c)

Not this one. That is Verified from IntelliMake's layout: S1, the receiving conveyor, precedes S2.53

Where to look first

For: Anyone with no robotics background: a visitor, a new operator, a manager
Kind of task: Recognise and recall, with plain-language explanations and pictures

In this part you learn which one place to start from, which two manuals a newcomer needs, and which videos exist, with a warning about the ones made for other arms and about their missing captions. Each resource has a card with its link.

One place to start

  • UFactory Docs is UFACTORY's documentation hub. It links the Studio user manual, support articles, the API documents, the accessories manual, the 850 hardware manual and the release notes1.
  • This project's advice: start there, whatever your tier2.
  • Manual or page

    UFactory Docs home page

UFactory Docs (docs.ufactory.cc) is UFACTORY's documentation hub. It links the UFACTORY Studio user manual, support articles, the API documents (Python SDK, WebSocket API, G-code, Modbus TCP, private TCP, Modbus RTU), the accessories manual, the 850 hardware manual and the release notes.1

The two manuals a newcomer needs

  • The UFACTORY 850 Hardware Manual covers safety, installation, the electrical interfaces, maintenance and the technical specifications. Anyone can read it; the electrical chapters are aimed at more experienced users10.
  • UFACTORY's Product Downloads page has the same manual as a PDF, version V2.6.1, for reading offline11.
  • The UFACTORY Studio User Manual applies to the 850. It explains the browser-based Studio application: live control, Blockly drag-and-drop programming and settings. It suits anyone learning to operate the arm without code12.
  • UFACTORY's Studio page offers Studio for Windows, macOS and Linux, and lists its features, including live control, recording and hand teaching13.
  • Manual or page

UFACTORY 850 Hardware Manual (online), 1. Safety

The UFACTORY 850 Hardware Manual (online, docs.850.ufactory.cc), published by UFACTORY, covers safety, hardware installation, controller and robot electrical interfaces, maintenance, production information and technical specifications. Useful for anyone installing or wiring the arm; suits all tiers, with the electrical chapters aimed at intermediate and expert users.10

Videos (no captions)

  • Live Control tutorial. An official Studio tutorial. It is titled for the xArm, but Studio's Live Control also applies to the 850. It has no captions6.
  • Trajectory recording tutorial. An official Studio tutorial on recording hand-taught paths, titled for the xArm. It has no captions14.
  • Hardware installation. An official set-up video titled for the xArm, while the 850 has its own hardware manual. It has no captions7.
  • This project's advice: use the installation video only as a general guide, and check each 850 step against the 850 hardware manual4.
  • The 850 at work. One video shows the 850 with a dexterous robot hand doing delicate and tool-using tasks15; another shows it in a welding application built by an integrator16. Neither has captions.
  • UFACTORY's YouTube channel carries product demonstrations, application videos and support tutorials. Caption status is given for each video, not for the channel as a whole5.
  • No 850-specific set-up video was found, so which set-up steps differ for the 850 is not confirmed by any video3.

A video listed here is not a recommendation. When checked, none of these videos had captions, uploaded or auto-generated, so a video is only a pointer, and the written manual stays the resource to learn from.

Check yourself

Answer, then check. Each option has its own feedback, and nothing is scored.

q-s10-b-01 The xArm installation video shows a step, and you want to know whether it is the same on the 850. Where do you check?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Yes. The video is titled for the xArm, so check each 850 step against the 850's own hardware manual.7410

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. It is official, but titled for the xArm. Which steps differ for the 850 is not confirmed by any video, so check the 850 manual.34

  3. Check option (c)

Not this one. The 850 has its own hardware manual, which covers its installation and wiring.107

q-s10-b-02 You need a UFACTORY document but do not know which one. Where do you start?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. It links the 850 manual, the Studio manual, the API documents and the release notes in one place.12

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. The channel has demonstrations and tutorials, but none of the videos this site links from it has captions, and videos are pointers, not documents. The documents are gathered at UFactory Docs.51

q-s10-b-03 You want to learn to move the arm and build a program without writing code. Which document do you read?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. It applies to the 850 and explains live control and Blockly drag-and-drop programming.12

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. The Python SDK is for writing control scripts in code, which suits more experienced users.17

  3. Check option (c)

Not this one. That article gives D-H parameters and link masses for building your own models, an expert task.18

2Novice

Where to look when something goes wrong

For: Someone who will work near or with the cell: operator, trainee technician
Kind of task: Explain and sequence: put steps in order, match parts to their functions

In this part you learn where UFACTORY answers everyday problems, and how to recover a control box you can no longer reach, from written steps rather than from a video alone. It is for someone who will work near or with the cell.

The Help Center

  • The UFACTORY Help Center is UFACTORY's support knowledge base. It has article collections on Studio and Blockly, grippers and IO, the SDKs, ROS and kinematics, hardware, and frequently asked questions19.
  • Its article on collision detection explains how the current-based detection works, and how to avoid false triggers by setting the payload, the mounting direction and the friction parameters correctly20.
  • That is the article to read when the arm stops for collisions that did not happen, for example because the payload was set wrongly2021.
  • Its article comparing the xArm 5, 6 and 7 explains each arm's axis count, payload and motion, which helps place the 850 in UFACTORY's range22.

Recovering a lost IP address

  • UFACTORY Technical Support has a video on resetting a control box's IP address. It has no captions, so here are the written steps as well23.
  1. Press the emergency stop button and turn off the control box24.
  2. Connect controller input RI0 to GND with a cable25.
  3. Power on. A beep means the IP address has been reset to 192.168.1.11126.
  4. Remove the RI0-GND cable and wait about 60 seconds for start-up27.
  5. Open 192.168.1.111:18333 in a browser to connect28.

Check yourself

Answer, then check. Each option has its own feedback, and nothing is scored.

q-s10-n-01 The arm keeps stopping for collisions that did not happen. Which UFACTORY resource do you read?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. It explains how to avoid false triggers by setting the payload, mounting direction and friction parameters correctly.20

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. That article compares axis count, payload and motion across UFACTORY's range. It does not cover false collision triggers.2220

q-s10-n-02 Nobody can reach the control box on the network any more: its IP address is lost. Which resource helps?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. The video has no captions, so the written steps matter: after the reset the box answers at 192.168.1.111.2326

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. The release notes list firmware and Studio changes. Network recovery is shown in the IP-reset video and its written steps.3023

q-s10-n-03Safety You are about to reset the control box's IP address. What do you do before connecting RI0 to GND?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. That is the first step of the written procedure, before any wiring is touched.24

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. The procedure starts by pressing the emergency stop and turning the box off, then connecting RI0 to GND.2425

Planning upgrades, code and cell layouts

For: Someone who will set up, program or maintain the arm: technician, student engineer
Kind of task: Apply: work through written scenarios that need a decision (which mode, which setting, what to do about this error), with feedback on each choice. Simulation added in M2/M4 extends this; it does not define it

In this part you learn which resources to open before changing the software on an arm, before writing a control script, and before laying out a cell. You also learn to tell a UFACTORY resource from a third-party one, and a released feature from a preview. It is for someone who will set up, program or maintain the arm.

Before an upgrade: the release notes

  • UFACTORY's release notes site lists firmware and Studio releases with their changes, the recommended matching firmware, Studio, SDK and ROS versions, and offline update packages for the 85030.
  • Read it before any upgrade: UFACTORY recommends a matching set of versions, and mismatched versions are not the recommended configuration3031.

A preview is not a feature

  • UFACTORY's video on dual-arm self-collision detection previews a feature still in research and development. It has no captions3536.
  • Collision detection of any kind is a configurable controller function, not a validated safeguard, so a preview of it changes nothing about how a two-arm cell must be guarded37.

q-s10-i-01 Before upgrading the firmware, where do you find the matching Studio, SDK and ROS versions?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. It lists the recommended matching versions, and mismatched versions are not the recommended configuration.3031

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. The hardware manual covers safety, installation, wiring and specifications. Version sets are on the release notes site.1030

q-s10-i-02 Is RoboDK a UFACTORY resource?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. Its robot library has a uFactory 850 model for offline programming; this record is Inferred.34

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. RoboDK is a licensed third-party program. UFACTORY's own 3D files are on its Product Downloads page.3411

q-s10-i-03Safety UFACTORY's dual-arm video shows two arms avoiding each other. Can a two-arm cell rely on that feature to keep people or parts safe?
  1. Check option (a)

Correct. Right. The video previews an R&D feature, and collision detection must not replace risk-assessed protective devices.353637

  2. Check option (b)

Not this one. An official preview is not a released feature: UFACTORY says the function is still in R&D.3536

Source code, models and standards

For: Someone who designs, integrates or changes the cell: integrator, engineer, the M5 team
Kind of task: Analyse and decide: weigh trade-offs, resolve contradictions, critique a configuration

In this part you learn which developer repositories apply to this machine, and how far, which modelling data UFACTORY publishes, and which standards this platform has not read. It is for someone who designs, integrates or changes the cell.

SDKs and ROS

  • xArm-CPLUS-SDK is UFACTORY's official C++ SDK for the 850 and its siblings38.
  • xarm_ros2 provides ROS 2 simulation models, MoveIt motion planning and control demos, with 850-specific launch files for simulation and for a real arm39.
  • Those ROS 2 packages are tested only on the distributions with a matching code branch: Foxy, Galactic, Humble, Jazzy and Rolling40.
  • xarm_ros provides the ROS 1 packages, with a separate ReadMe for Lite 6 and UF850 users41.
  • The main xarm_ros README tells 850 users to follow it only up to chapter 4.7 and then switch to that separate ReadMe. A claim from the ROS READMEs holds for the 850 only where the text names the 85042.

What the sources do not settle for this section. Nothing here is papered over with a plausible number.

  • Kind: Gap

No dedicated official '850 introduction' or 850-specific set-up video was found on UFACTORY's YouTube channel or in YouTube search results. UFACTORY's set-up tutorials are titled for the xArm, so which steps differ for the 850 is not confirmed by video.

  • Kind: Gap

The ISO 10218-1/-2:2025 texts and ISO/TS 15066 are paywalled and were not read. No clause numbers, force or pressure limits, or required PL values from them are recorded in this corpus.

  • Kind: Gap

Whether business cards are the physical Phase 1 cell's workpiece, or only the workpiece in this project's simulation, is not recorded. IntelliMake's diagram speaks of 'blanks' and 'personalized laser-engraved gifts' (Q14a).

Key to the badges
Confidence: Verified
A manufacturer or IntelliMake document says so, or it was observed directly. It does not mean anyone measured it at S2.
Confidence: Inferred
Reasoned from Verified facts. The reasoning is printed with the record.
Confidence: Assumed
Plausible but untested. The record says how it would be checked.
Kind: Gap
Not known. No figure or answer is given in its place.
Kind: Contradiction
Sources disagree. Both sides are shown, and the site does not pick one silently.
Kind: Recommendation
Project advice drawn from the records it cites. Not a fact about the machine and not a confidence class, so the filter never hides it.

Start from UFactory Docs (docs.ufactory.cc) at any tier: it links the 850 hardware manual, the UFACTORY Studio manual, the API documents and the release notes in one place.

This is advice from this project, based on: res-003 Verified

Why: UFactory Docs links the 850 hardware manual, the Studio manual, the API documents and the release notes (res-003), so a learner at any level reaches the manufacturer's current documents from one page.

    Not known

No dedicated official '850 introduction' or 850-specific set-up video was found on UFACTORY's YouTube channel or in YouTube search results. UFACTORY's set-up tutorials are titled for the xArm, so which steps differ for the 850 is not confirmed by video.

    Project advice

Use the 'UFACTORY xArm Hardware Installation' video only as a general guide, and check each 850-specific installation step against the 850 hardware manual.

This is advice from this project, based on: res-022 Verified res-002 Verified

Why: The video is titled and made for the xArm (res-022), while the 850 has its own hardware manual with its own installation chapter (res-002). Steps that differ between models would be wrong for the 850 if taken from the video.

Why: No fetched UFACTORY document gives these functions a safety rating or performance level (safety-087). Collision detection is a current-model comparison that can false-trigger and can be switched off (safety-062, safety-067); safety boundary and reduced mode are software settings (safety-073, safety-074). UFACTORY keeps safety signals separate from non-safety devices (safety-057). A function with no documented rating cannot stand in for a rated protective device.

UFACTORY's own 850 documentation names the Python, C++ and ROS SDKs as programming options for the 850, and the 850 User Manual V2.3.0 points 850 users to xarm_ros and xarm_ros2 as the '850-ROS-library'. So the xArm-Python-SDK and xArm-C++-SDK documentation and code apply to the 850. The ROS READMEs apply only in part: the xarm_ros README tells Lite 6/850 users to follow it only up to chapter 4.7 and then switch to a separate Lite6/UF850 ReadMe, and the xarm_ros2 README marks its additional tests as xArm-only. A claim drawn from the ROS READMEs is therefore Verified for the 850 only where the quoted text, or the section it sits in, names the 850 or uf850. None of this extends to the Modbus TCP manual or the xArm Developer Manual.

No fetched UFACTORY document calls the 850's collision detection, safety boundary or reduced mode safety-rated, or gives them a performance level.

Why we infer this: Verified: collision detection is a model-based current comparison that UFACTORY says can false-trigger with wrong settings and can be disabled (level 0, Advanced Settings toggle, a documented default password); safety boundary and reduced mode are software settings exposed in Studio and the SDK. UFACTORY distinguishes safety signals (EI/SI, redundant pairs) from non-safety devices. Inferred: no fetched UFACTORY source assigns a PL, Category or safety rating to these software functions (see the gap on performance level); this is a statement about the documents fetched, not proof that no rating exists.

    The record says

The 850's maximum payload is 5 kg, which covers the end-of-arm tool and the part it holds.

Why we infer this: Verified: UFACTORY's specification table gives the 850 a maximum payload of 5 kg (spec-002), but does not say whether the end-of-arm tool counts toward it. Verified: the UFACTORY Studio glossary, which applies to the 850 (iface-145), defines the TCP payload setting as the actual weight of the 'end tool & other object'. No UFACTORY source joins the two in one statement. This platform infers that the 5 kg rating is read against the same total the controller models, tool plus part, so the tool's weight leaves less for the part. Until UFACTORY states it, treat that as an inference, not a rating.
