Operate the Real Arm · xArm 6 · Step 2 of 9

Connect Your Computer to the Arm

UFACTORY Studio reaches the arm's control box over a network cable. So first you put your computer on the same network as the arm, then you power the arm up, and then you open Studio and connect it to the arm.

Warning

Follow UFACTORY's current Studio manual, linked in this page's references1.

What You Need

  • A computer with the UFACTORY Studio desktop app downloaded and installed: the lab uses the desktop app2. Download it from UFACTORY's Studio page, linked in this page's references, which offers it for Windows, macOS and Linux3.
  • An Ethernet cable from your computer to the control box. The xArm manual recommends connecting the control box directly to the computer, and advises against a wireless link to a router, because of delay and packet loss4.
  • Your arm's address, from your lab staff or from the label on the control box: a changed address should be marked on the box5. The arm's default address is in the 192.168.1.xxx range6.
  • An address for your computer on the same network as your arm, for example 192.168.1.x, and the subnet mask, both from your lab staff. Your computer and the control box must be on the same network segment76.

Set Your Computer's Address on Windows

  1. These steps are for Windows 11. Plug the Ethernet cable into your computer and the control box84.
  2. Open Settings, then Network & internet, then Ethernet, and select the Ethernet network you are connected to8.
  3. Next to IP assignment, select Edit8.
  4. Choose Manual, then turn on IPv48.
  5. Type your computer's IP address and subnet mask, fill in the gateway only if your lab staff give you one, and select Save87.

Set Your Computer's Address on a Mac

  1. Plug the Ethernet cable into your Mac and the control box4.
  2. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Network in the sidebar9.
  3. Click the Ethernet connection, then click Details9.
  4. Click TCP/IP. From the Configure IPv4 menu, choose Manually9.
  5. Enter your computer's IP address and subnet mask in the labeled fields97.

Windows and macOS change these screens between versions. If yours look different, follow Microsoft's or Apple's current help, linked in this page's references89.

Power Up

  1. Check the cables once more, and that the arm cannot hit any person or equipment within its working range1011.
  2. Turn on the control box's OFF/ON button and check that its indicator lights are lit12.
  3. Press the power button. The control box is on when its CONTROLLER light comes on13.
  4. Turn the emergency stop button in the direction of its arrow so that it pulls up. The ROBOT PWR light comes on14.

Open UFACTORY Studio

  1. Open the UFACTORY Studio desktop app. On its connection screen, as used with the xArm 850, enter your arm's address in the IP search field, from the label on the control box or from your lab staff2155.
  2. Click Connect Server15.
  3. Check that Studio shows your arm: Product Information names its model16.
  4. Do not change the arm's settings, its address among them: changing protected settings is not allowed17.

Real and Sim

  • Studio has a Real and Sim switch. In Sim the arm does not move, but Studio still needs the real arm connected, and settings you make in Sim apply to the real arm18.
  • In Sim, unlocking a joint still unlocks the real arm's joint19.
  • Practice in this site's simulator. Studio's Sim is not separate from the real arm: settings you change and joints you unlock there apply to the real arm1819. Lab staff confirm the arm's configuration and approve you before Studio drives the real arm2021.

Key to the badges
Confidence: Verified
A manufacturer or IntelliMake document says so, or it was observed directly. It does not mean anyone measured it at S6.
Confidence: Inferred
Reasoned from Verified facts. The reasoning is printed with the record.
Confidence: Assumed
Plausible but untested. The record says how it would be checked.
Kind: Gap
Not known. No figure or answer is given in its place.
Kind: Contradiction
Sources disagree. Both sides are shown, and the site does not pick one silently.
Kind: Recommendation
Project advice drawn from the records it cites. Not a fact about the machine and not a confidence class, so the filter never hides it.
Awaiting cell access
Awaiting cell access: could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S6 cell can be observed.

Asked whether the lab opens UFACTORY Studio in a web browser or with the desktop app, the answer given on 2026-10-23 was the desktop app, and that learners should download it.

Reasoning: Verified as a dated report of how Studio is opened in the lab, as of 2026-10-23 and no further. The question was about the lab, where the xArm 6 is operated from Studio (int-089); the answer names no arm. It names no Studio version and no computer, and no inspection is recorded. It says that the lab uses the desktop app and that learners should download it; it says nothing about whether the browser route UFACTORY's Studio manual describes works.

UFACTORY Studio's connection screen, as used with the xArm 850 at S2 and reported on 2026-10-23, has an IP search field for the arm and a Connect Server button: the operator enters the IP address from the control box and clicks Connect Server. No reading of the screen with the xArm 6 is recorded.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S6 cell can be observed.

Why we infer this: Inferred, not observed with the xArm 6. The report (S241, 2026-10-23) is of UFACTORY Studio's connection screen as it was used with the xArm 850 (ops-216), as of that date and no further. The xArm 6 is operated from the same Studio software, whose manual lists the xArm 6 among the models it applies to (iface-502), and the xArm 6's Studio read 2.7.0 on 2026-10-16 (int-610), so its connection screen is inferred to have the same IP search field and Connect Server button; the screen was seen with the 850, and a different Studio version may lay it out differently. No screenshot of the connection screen is recorded, and no inspection is recorded. The same report says the Connect page's 'Open UFACTORY Studio' step 1 is incorrect; it makes no statement about the browser route the Studio manual's connection chapter describes (iface-505).

Before motion is enabled on the xArm 6, lab staff confirm that the arm's speed, payload, workspace and safety configuration are the approved ones, and the operator does not change a protected setting. The xArm 6's safety settings are not on record, so the operator stays out of the working area while the arm moves.

This is advice from this project, based on: int-603 Verified safety-607 Gap, awaiting cell access safety-511 Verified

Why: IntelliMake's rules require the approved speed, payload, workspace and safety configuration to be verified before motion is enabled, and forbid modifying protected settings (int-603). None of the xArm 6's safety-related settings is confirmed (safety-607). The xArm manual says nobody should be in the working area while the arm runs (safety-511). The confirmation is lab staff's, because the approved configuration is theirs to state.
