Respond to an Abnormal Condition

Something will go wrong sooner or later. What matters is the order: make it safe first, then find the cause, then recover, with lab staff. Never create a fault on purpose to practice this: use the simulator.

The Rule for Every Error

  • When an error occurs, the arm stops at once and throws away its queued commands. The error must be cleared by hand and the motion re-planned before normal work goes on1.
  • Stop the arm and ask for help whenever its condition is uncertain2.
  • Before any restart, make sure the restart motions will not hit anything3.

Warning

Never ground, bridge or rewire the control box's terminals to clear an error or to resume after a stop, whatever text Studio shows. Wiring is installation work4. Do not change a protected setting, such as the collision sensitivity, to get the arm going again25.

Common Conditions

ConditionHow it is detectedImmediate safe responseLikely causeRecovery procedure
The control box's emergency stop is pressedStudio shows a Controller Error, error code C1: the emergency stop button on the control box is pushed in6Keep clear. The arm loses power, brakes slightly and falls, and a card it holds can drop789Someone pressed the button: in an emergency, or by accident10With lab staff, find out why it was pressed and make sure the restart motions will not hit anything. Turn the button in the direction of its arrow to release it, then click Enable Robot3116
A collision stopThe arm stops, and Studio shows error code C31, abnormal current in the arm, with the joint, its torque, the collision sensitivity, the payload and the mounting setting12. With collision rebound on, the arm first moves back a little1314Click STOP and keep clear. Press the emergency stop if anyone is hurt or at risk1510The arm hit something, or the payload or mounting setting does not match the real arm, which causes false collision alarms1216Check whether the arm really collided, and clear the obstacle12. Lab staff decide what else to check, such as the payload and mounting settings; then the error is cleared and the move re-planned2161
Loss of communication between the computer and the armWith Network Monitoring on, Studio checks whether the connection is interrupted while you hold a motion button in Live Control17. A Python program gets code A-1, robot not connected18If the arm is moving and Studio does not respond, press the emergency stop107The network cable is out or damaged, the computer's address is wrong, or a wireless link is in use192021Reconnect the cable directly to the control box, check your computer's address1920, then in Studio enter the arm's address in the IP search field and click Connect Server again22. Read the arm's state before any move23
The suction does not hold, or the card dropsThe card does not lift, or falls while carried. In a Blockly program with object detection on, the program stops when the card is not held24Click STOP. Do not reach for the card until the arm has stopped1525The cup was not on the card, the card is misplaced, suction was not switched on, or the tool is loose. A gripper that holds unstably can drop a part26927With the arm stopped, pick up the card and check it. Check the tool is fixed, test the suction on a card again, and restart only with lab staff's approval272628
A joint past its limit, or a poor starting positionStudio shows error code C23: a joint angle exceeds its limit, with the joint and its angle29Stop and keep clear1The arm started from, or was moved to, a pose outside a joint's range29Make sure the path is clear, then press Initial Position in Live Control to bring the arm back303
Studio's Controller Error dialog: Code C1, the Emergency Stop Button on the Control Box is pushed in to stop; please release the Emergency Stop Button, and then click Enable Robot; Close and Enable Robot buttons.

Anything Else

  • For an error code the manual does not list, power the arm on again. If several power cycles do not fix it, lab staff contact UFACTORY's technical support31.
  • UFACTORY's Error Handling chapter lists every controller, joint and SDK code with its handling. It is linked in this page's references3212.

    Project advice

Do not ground, bridge or rewire the control box's EI or SI terminals to clear an error or to resume after a stop, whatever text UFACTORY Studio shows. Which stop devices are wired to them at the cell is not known, and wiring is installation work.

This is advice from this project, based on: safety-049 Verified safety-007 Verified safety-006 Verified safety-148 Contradiction, awaiting cell access safety-128 Gap, awaiting cell access safety-130 Gap, awaiting cell access ops-091 Verified

Why: EI and SI are the control box's two fixed safety inputs: EI is used only for emergency stops and SI for all other safety protection (safety-049). UFACTORY says installation and commissioning must be done by professionals (safety-007), and warns that altering the controller safety configuration makes the whole robot system a new system whose safety reviews must be updated (safety-006). UFACTORY's Studio manual gave, until 2026-10-13, grounding the control box's 2 EIs as the fix for error code C2, and as read on 2026-10-13 gives a different fix (safety-148). Whether any emergency stop button besides the control box's is wired to EI at S2 is unknown (safety-128), and so is what is wired to SI (safety-130). The 850 manual's protective stop with a reset button pauses the arm when SI0 and SI1 are disconnected from GND (ops-091). A wire from an EI or SI terminal to GND, added to clear an error or to resume, would bridge out whatever stop device is wired there. So this project advises against it whichever text Studio shows.

  5. Confidence: Verifiedsafety-006

    The record says

UFACTORY warns not to alter the controller safety configuration: if its parameters are modified, the whole robot system counts as a new system and all safety reviews, such as risk assessments, must be updated.

On the real xArm 850, on firmware 2.8.2 (2026-10-22), pressing the control box's emergency stop raised controller error code C1, 'The Emergency Stop Button on the Control Box is pushed in to stop', with the fix 'Please release the Emergency Stop Button, and then click the "Enable Robot"' and an Enable Robot button.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.

As used with the xArm 850 at S2, reported on 2026-10-23, UFACTORY Studio's connection screen has an IP search field for the arm and a Connect Server button: the operator enters the IP address from the control box and clicks Connect Server.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.

Reasoning: Verified as a dated report from the lab, of the screen as it was used with the xArm 850, as of 2026-10-23 and no further. No screenshot of the connection screen is recorded, nor the Studio version it was seen on, and no inspection is recorded. The same report says the Connect page's 'Open UFACTORY Studio' step 1 is incorrect; it makes no statement about the browser route the Studio manual's connection chapter describes (iface-005).

UFACTORY Studio's Blockly has vacuum gripper blocks: one reads the vacuum gripper's state (0 picked, 1 released), one waits until an object is picked or released or a timeout passes, and one switches the vacuum gripper on or off. 26. Confidence: VerifiedAwaiting cell accessops-209

    The record says

On 2026-10-22 (Studio 2.6.0, before the update) UFACTORY Studio's Live Control for the xArm 850 had the Vacuum Gripper selected as its end effector, with OPEN and CLOSE buttons; its speed slider was at 12 % and Manual Mode was off.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.

Reasoning: Verified as a direct reading of UFACTORY Studio connected to the real xArm 850 ('Real' selected) on 2026-10-22, before the firmware update that day (int-608). It is what the screen showed that day and no further: a slider position and a selected preset can be changed at any time. No inspection of the tool is recorded.
