Set Up the Arm

Setting up takes the arm, powered up and connected to Studio, to ready for the approved task: checked against its approved settings with lab staff, enabled, at a known starting position, with the card and the tool ready and the program chosen. Nothing moves until lab staff have confirmed the settings.

Check the Arm's Settings with Lab Staff

Studio's status panel: State Stop, Mode Position, Payload 0.61 Kg, Mounting Floor, the tool point's X, Y and Z in mm, its roll, pitch and yaw, and the six joint angles.

Before motion is enabled, lab staff confirm that the arm's speed, payload, workspace and safety configuration are the approved ones23. Read each item to them from Studio:

  1. State and Mode, in the status panel. On 2026-10-22, with the arm stopped, they read Stop and Position1.
  2. Mounting: it must match how the arm is really installed. A wrong setting makes the arm misjudge gravity, with false collision stops and uncontrolled motion in manual mode4. On 2026-10-22 it read Floor1.
  3. Payload and TCP, under Settings > Motion > TCP: they must match the tool actually fitted5. On 2026-10-22 the 850 held the Vacuum Gripper preset: 0.61 kg, and a tool point 126 mm from the flange. These are entered settings, not a measurement of the tool6.
  4. Safety, under Settings > Safety: the boundary, reduced mode and the speed limits are what lab staff approved. On 2026-10-22 the boundary was set far outside the arm's reach and reduced mode was off7.
  5. Collision detection, on at the approved sensitivity. On 2026-10-22 it was on at sensitivity 38.
  6. Safeguards: on 2026-10-22 no controller input was set to a safety function such as Stop Moving9. On 2026-10-23 no guards or interlocks were fitted10. The emergency stop is the red button on the control box, and nothing else is wired into its emergency-stop input11. Stay out of the arm's working area while it moves3.

Warning

Do not change a protected setting2. UFACTORY warns that a changed safety configuration makes the whole system a new one, whose risk assessment must be redone12. If a setting does not match, stop and tell lab staff.

Enable the Arm

  • When lab staff confirm the settings, click Enable in Studio. It switches on the motors, and the button disappears once the arm is enabled1314.
  • From now on treat the arm as moving, even when it looks still: it may be waiting for a signal15.

Go to a Known Starting Position

  • Set the Live Control speed slider low before any move. It runs from 1% (2.3 mm/s) to 100% (230 mm/s)16. On 2026-10-22 the 850's slider was at 12 %17.
  • Make sure the path is clear, then press and hold Initial Position. The arm moves to its initial position, by default all joints at 018.

Load the Card and Check the Tool

  • The workpiece is a business card19. Place it where the approved program picks it up, as lab staff show you, with the arm still2021.
  • The 850's tool is a suction tool using a single suction aperture22. Before the run, test it on a card on the work surface with your hands clear: see Run17.

Select the Approved Program

  • Choose only the existing program lab staff have approved. Do not edit it: creating or changing programs is the next step, not this one23.
  • In Blockly, open that project. Run and Pause start and pause it24.

Make the Operating Area Safe

  • Nobody and no other equipment is in the arm's working area while it runs21.
  • UFACTORY recommends marking the arm's range of motion with a line, including the reach of its tool. Check where that line is25.
  • You stand where you can reach the emergency stop on the control box1126.

    Project advice

Before motion is enabled on the xArm 850, lab staff confirm that the arm's speed, payload, workspace and safety configuration are the approved ones, and the operator does not change a protected setting. As read on 2026-10-22 the 850's safety boundary was in effect off, reduced mode was off and no input was set to a safety function, so the operator stays out of the working area while the arm moves.

This is advice from this project, based on: int-603 Verified safety-201 Verified, awaiting cell access safety-203 Verified, awaiting cell access safety-009 Verified safety-144 Recommendation

Why: IntelliMake's rules require the approved speed, payload, workspace and safety configuration to be verified before motion is enabled, and forbid modifying protected settings (int-603). The 850's controller, as read on 2026-10-22, had no effective boundary (safety-201) and no input configured as a protective stop (safety-203); UFACTORY says no people should be in the working area while the arm runs (safety-009), and a safeguard nobody has confirmed is not relied on (safety-144). The confirmation is lab staff's, because the approved configuration is theirs to state.

On 2026-10-22, on firmware 2.8.2, the xArm 850's controller held the TCP preset Vacuum Gripper: a payload of 0.61 kg with its center of gravity 53 mm along z, and a tool point 126 mm along z from the flange, with no other offset or rotation. These are the settings someone entered, not a measurement of the tool.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.

Reasoning: Verified as a direct reading of the xArm 850's controller on 2026-10-22 (Studio's TCP page, 'Real' selected, firmware 2.8.2). The figures equal UFACTORY's Vacuum Gripper preset (ops-092). Nothing was weighed or measured; no inspection of the tool is recorded.

The business card is the workpiece in both the physical cell and simulation: in the physical cell the cards are produced with a laser engraver, and in simulation the card is a prop object that can be selected.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.

    Evidence · 1 citation

Both, in physical we are producing cards using a laser engraver, in simulation this is a prop object that can be selected.
