Operate the Real Arm · xArm 850 · Step 1 of 9

Prepare for Operation

Before the arm moves, you check that it is fit to run, that you know how to stop it, and that you are allowed to run it. Work through this page every time, not only the first time.

Read the Manufacturer's Instructions

  • Follow UFACTORY's instructions and the lab's safety procedures1.
  • For the 850 these are UFACTORY's 850 hardware manual and the UFACTORY Studio user manual, which covers the 850. Both are linked in this page's references23.
  • UFACTORY says each operator should read the manual and understand the arm's operating procedures and how to deal with its errors. Read Studio's Live Control and Error Handling chapters before your first run456.

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Wear all the protective equipment the lab requires1.
  • Ask lab staff what to wear before you begin17.
  • The arm and control box get hot in use: do not touch them while they run or just after8.

Inspect Before Each Use

UFACTORY says the arm and the whole system must be checked before each use9.

  1. The arm: it is securely bolted in place, its joints are fitted properly and its bolts are not loose10.
  2. The tool: the suction tool is properly and securely fixed to the end of the arm1011.
  3. The cables: the power and signal cables between the arm and the control box, the network cable and the control box's power cable are properly connected121314.
  4. The work area: there is room for the arm to move and nothing in its way, and nobody is inside its reach, including the reach of its tool41516.
  5. Utilities: the control box's power cable is connected, and all the circuits' status is checked1410.
  6. Safety: confirm current lab safety protocols are being followed1.

Warning

Do no maintenance, electrical work or internal troubleshooting unless you are specifically authorized17. Never connect or disconnect the arm cable while the system is on mains power: it can give you an electric shock18.

The Emergency Stop

The top of the xArm 850's control box with its red mushroom emergency stop button on a yellow ring marked STOP.
The xArm 850's emergency stop, on the top of its control box19. Image: Derek Stringfellow
  • The 850's emergency stop is the red button on its control box. Nothing else is wired into its emergency-stop input19.
  • Pressing it removes the arm's power within 300 ms. The arm brakes slightly and falls, and a card it holds can drop202122.
  • The control box must sit outside the arm's working range, where the button can be reached in an emergency23.
  • Studio's STOP button is a software stop that leaves the power on. It is not an emergency stop2425.

In an Emergency

  1. Press the emergency stop on the control box19.
  2. Stay clear of the arm and of anything under it2122.
  3. Tell lab staff, and leave the restart to them unless you are trained for it2627.

Get Approval

  • Get the approval of an instructor or authorized lab staff before you begin. They supervise the run when required7.
  • Stop and ask for help whenever you are unsure of the arm's condition27.

Key to the badges
Confidence: Verified
A manufacturer or IntelliMake document says so, the project owner stated it as the design, or it was observed directly. It does not mean anyone measured it at S2.
Confidence: Inferred
Reasoned from Verified facts. The reasoning is printed with the record.
Confidence: Assumed
Plausible but untested. The record says how it would be checked.
Kind: Gap
Not known. No figure or answer is given in its place.
Kind: Contradiction
Sources disagree. Both sides are shown, and the site does not pick one silently.
Kind: Recommendation
Project advice drawn from the records it cites. Not a fact about the machine and not a confidence class, so the filter never hides it.
Awaiting cell access
Awaiting cell access: could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.
This project's simulation and agent design, not the physical cell

  25. Kind: RecommendationThis project's simulation and agent design, not the physical cellsafety-142

    Project advice

Do not count a software stop (Studio's STOP, SDK set_state(4) or SDK emergency_stop()) as an emergency stop or safeguard in the S2 risk assessment.

This is advice from this project, based on: safety-089 Inferred safety-035 Verified safety-036 Verified safety-025 Verified

Why: Software stops leave arm power on and are not the hardware emergency stop (safety-089, safety-035, safety-036), which removes arm power (safety-025). Crediting them as an emergency stop would overstate the protection the cell has.
