Operate the Real Arm · xArm 850 · Step 7 of 9

Shut Down and Secure the Arm

Shutting down is part of the job, not the end of it: the arm is left safe, clean and switched off, and the next person knows what happened during your run.

  1. Complete or stop the operation. Let the approved program finish, or click Studio's STOP: the arm stops at once and its queued commands are cleared12.
  2. Remove the card. On the 850, Studio's STOP does not reset the outputs, so the suction can still hold the card after a STOP3. With the arm stopped and your hands clear of its path, release the card with the gripper button that releases, then take it off the work area45.
  3. Return the arm to a safe state. Make sure the path is clear and press and hold Initial Position, or move the arm to the rest position lab staff give you61. Turn Manual Mode off if it is on7.
  4. Remove the arm's power. Press the emergency stop button and check that the ROBOT PWR light is off89.
  5. Switch off the control box. It takes about 5 seconds to power off. Do not switch it on again within those 5 seconds10.
  6. Clean, once the arm and control box have cooled: wipe dirt or grease off the arm's carbon fiber shell with 95% alcohol or 70% isopropanol, keep the liquid out of the joints, and clean the work area11112.
  7. Record any problem or maintenance need, in your operating report and to lab staff1. Studio's Log page, under Settings > My Device, shows the control box's, the joints' and the tool's error logs, and can download them13.
  • Leave the arm's settings as you found them: do not change a protected setting14.

Key to the badges
Confidence: Verified
A manufacturer or IntelliMake document says so, the project owner stated it as the design, or it was observed directly. It does not mean anyone measured it at S2.
Confidence: Inferred
Reasoned from Verified facts. The reasoning is printed with the record.
Confidence: Assumed
Plausible but untested. The record says how it would be checked.
Kind: Gap
Not known. No figure or answer is given in its place.
Kind: Contradiction
Sources disagree. Both sides are shown, and the site does not pick one silently.
Kind: Recommendation
Project advice drawn from the records it cites. Not a fact about the machine and not a confidence class, so the filter never hides it.
Awaiting cell access
Awaiting cell access: could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.
This project's simulation and agent design, not the physical cell
This project's simulation and agent design, not the physical cell.

    The record says

With 'Clear the IO output when the robot is stopped' off, as it was on the xArm 850 on 2026-10-22, Studio's STOP does not reset the arm's outputs, so an output that switches the suction tool keeps its state after a STOP. Which output the 850's tool uses is not shown.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.

Why we infer this: UFACTORY's Settings page says the option resets the outputs after a STOP command (Verified, the manual), and the 850's screen shows it off for every output (safety-202, Verified). With it off, a STOP leaves the outputs as they were. Inferred because which output drives the tool, and what the tool does when that output stays on, is not recorded (safety-139).

On 2026-10-22 (Studio 2.6.0, before the update) UFACTORY Studio's Live Control for the xArm 850 had the Vacuum Gripper selected as its end effector, with OPEN and CLOSE buttons; its speed slider was at 12 % and Manual Mode was off.

Awaiting cell access: this could be confirmed or corrected once the physical S2 cell can be observed.

Reasoning: Verified as a direct reading of UFACTORY Studio connected to the real xArm 850 ('Real' selected) on 2026-10-22, before the firmware update that day (int-608). It is what the screen showed that day and no further: a slider position and a selected preset can be changed at any time. No inspection of the tool is recorded.
